Ecuador is a true gem of South America with its vast array of wildlife and natural wonders. What sets Ecuador apart is its biodiversity, which is the highest among all the countries in the region. It's home to 7% of the world's land animal species, including 18% of the world's bird species. From the Andes Mountains and the Ring of Fire to the Amazon Rainforest, Ecuador offers an unparalleled and diverse ecosystem.
Despite its incredible diversity, Ecuador's forests are among the most fragile and vulnerable ecosystems, and the Chocó rainforest has suffered some of the highest rates of deforestation caused by mining operations. Additionally, wildlife species are hunted for their meat or sold as exotic pets. The cloud forests are also exposed to high levels of ultraviolet radiation due to climate change, exacerbating the situation.
In response to these threats, Roque Sevilla, a former mayor of Quito and a passionate conservationist purchased 6,178-acres of land in the Chocó Cloud Forest to protect what remains of the area. He went on to build Mashpi Lodge, as an opportunity to create a unique and luxurious experience for travellers while also promoting the conservation of the surrounding cloud forest. He partnered with a team of architects and designers to create the lodge, which seamlessly blends into the surrounding forest.
Guests at Mashpi Lodge can expect to have a truly immersive and unforgettable experience The lodge offers a range of activities, from guided hikes through the forest spotting howler monkeys swinging through the trees and even a thrilling ride on their "Sky Bike" through the treetops. Guests can also take part in the lodge's ongoing research projects, which aim to better understand the forest's biodiversity and contribute to its preservation.
Mashpi Lodge has also worked in collaboration with Ecuadorian and international researchers to document new species in the Mashpi Cloud Forest Reserve. In-house biologists have played a crucial role in this effort and have identified nine new species in the reserve alone. Recently, a beautiful new species of glass frog named Hyalinobatrachium Mashpi was discovered by recording its unique call. Its identification demonstrates how many species are yet to be discovered, specifically in the tropical Andes.
The emergence of Ecuadorian Chocó as a nature-based tourism destination has been instrumental in creating awareness about its unique qualities and challenges. National parks in the region have extended their boundaries, and laws against logging and poaching are being enforced more effectively.
By providing visitors with the chance to experience the unique biodiversity of the area while supporting conservation initiatives, Mashpi Lodge is helping to ensure that Ecuador's cloud forest remains a natural wonder for generations to come.
Of course, no trip to Ecuador would be complete without a visit to the Galapagos Islands. This remote archipelago is home to some of the world’s most unique and fascinating wildlife. From giant tortoises and marine iguanas to sea lions and an array of colourful bird species. The Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island is a must-visit for anyone interested in conservation efforts, as it offers a glimpse into the ongoing work to protect the region’s precious giant tortoise population.
Hidden in a secluded giant tortoise reserve, nestled on the edge of an extinct volcano crater, Pikaia Lodge is another luxurious eco-retreat that offers the perfect opportunity to explore some of the most interesting islands of the Archipelago, secluded white beaches and wildlife sites of the Galapagos National Park.
The lodge offers a range of activities for guests to explore the island's unique flora and fauna. Guests can take a guided nature hike where they will cross paths with giant wild tortoises and forests full of birdsong. Snorkelling can also be enjoyed, where you can spot a variety of marine life, including sea turtles, rays, and numerous species of fish. The waters around the islands are teeming with life, and the opportunity to observe it up close is unforgettable.
Pikaia has also implemented various measures to minimise their impact on the fragile ecosystem of the islands. They undertook the massive reforestation of the grounds by planting over 11,000 trees to date, which led to the return of many tortoises and other wild animals to the area. Their on-site organic farm supplies much of the produce used in their restaurant. The cuisine is not only delicious but also innovative and incorporates local flavours and ingredients.
A trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that provides visitors with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and diversity of this unique region.
